Twelve Symbols, One by One

One large symbol per page, with its meaning

Chi Rho

The first two Greek letters of Christ, with Alpha and Omega: Christ, the beginning and the end.

Chi and Rho, X and P, are the first letters of Christ in Greek. The emperor Constantine painted them on his soldiers’ shields in 312.

Ichthys, the Fish

In Greek, the letters of the fish spell Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour.

The first Christians drew a fish on their tombs and rings: a secret sign that only believers could read.

Anchor

Hope, “an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast” (Hebrews 6:19).

Look closely: the crossbar of the anchor makes a cross. Early Christians hid it in plain sight.

Lamb of God

Christ, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).

John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and said: Behold the Lamb of God. The flag with the cross is the victory of Easter.

Pelican

Christ, who feeds his children with his own blood.

An old legend said the mother pelican feeds her chicks with her own blood, just as Jesus gives his life for us.

Dove

The Holy Spirit, who came down at the baptism of Jesus.

When Jesus was baptized in the river Jordan, the Holy Spirit came down on him like a dove.

Peacock

Immortality and the Resurrection.

People once believed the peacock never decayed, so it became a sign of eternal life.

Triquetra

The Holy Trinity: three Persons, one God.

Three loops that make one shape: a simple way to picture one God in three Persons.

Crown of Thorns and Nails

The Passion of Christ.

The soldiers made a crown of thorns for Jesus, the King who reigns from the cross.

Sacred Heart

The burning love of Jesus for every person.

Jesus shows his heart burning with love, wounded and crowned with thorns, with a cross on top.

Chalice, Wheat and Grapes

The Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ.

Bread is made from wheat and wine from grapes: at Mass they become the Body and Blood of Christ.

Keys of Saint Peter

“I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 16:19).

Jesus gave Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven. You will find them in every picture of Saint Peter.

About These Coloring Pages

Are these Christian symbols coloring pages free?

Yes. Each page can be downloaded on its own as a JPG, and the full sheet with its page of meanings as a PDF, without giving an email. Print as many copies as you need for your family, your parish or your classroom.

What age are they for?

The large single pages suit children from about 4 or 5, with big shapes to fill. The full sheet of twelve, with its smaller medallions and details, is better for older children, teenagers and adults who like fine coloring.

What do these symbols mean?

Each one says something about Christ, his Passion or his Church: the fish spells his name in Greek, the anchor is hope, the pelican and the Lamb are images of his sacrifice, the dove is the Holy Spirit, the keys belong to Saint Peter. The meaning is written under each page and on the second page of the sheet.

How should I print them?

Choose US Letter or A4, and print on one side of the paper so markers do not bleed through. Colored pencils work best for the small details of the full sheet.

Free for personal use, for your family, your parish, or catechism class. Please share the page, not the files re-hosted elsewhere. It helps others find them.
