The movements of modern Christ art
Post-Impressionism. Paul Gauguin was among the first to break with tradition. In his Yellow Christ and Green Christ he set the Crucifixion in the fields of Brittany, painted in flat, glowing color, making Christ at once a peasant and a god.
Symbolism. Jan Toorop and Odilon Redon turned Christ into vision and mystery. Toorop’s worship of the crucified Jesus, all sinuous line and pale light, treats the Passion as a dream of the soul.
Expressionism. For the Expressionists, faith meant suffering. Georges Rouault, trained as a stained-glass maker, gave his Christ heavy black outlines and burning color, while Emil Nolde and Max Beckmann painted the Passion with the raw force of their age.
