Its subject comes from the Book of Revelation, where the Lamb who was slain stands living and is worshipped by every nation, and from the words of John the Baptist, “Behold the Lamb of God,” so that the blood flowing into the chalice binds that heavenly vision to the Mass celebrated on every altar below. Every detail carries meaning, from the palms of the martyrs to the instruments of the Passion held by the angels, and the whole meadow is bathed in van Eyck’s miraculous light.
