The Coronation of the Virgin by Diego Velázquez

Description

The Coronation of the Virgin by Diego Velázquez canvas reproduction

High above the clouds, Christ and God the Father lean toward each other and hold a crown of flowers over the head of the Virgin Mary, while the dove of the Holy Spirit blazes in a burst of light between them. Mary lowers her eyes and lays her hand on her heart. The Coronation of the Virgin by Diego Velázquez is the Queen of Heaven of the Catholic prayers, painted by the greatest master of the Spanish Golden Age: the whole Trinity honouring the humble girl of Nazareth.

✨ Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?

Velázquez painted very few religious pictures, and this is the most serene of them. There is no crowd of angels and no golden throne: only three figures and a woman, bound together by colour. The crimson and violet robes of the Father and the Son frame the deep blue mantle of Mary, and the whole group draws the shape of a heart, with the dove at its top and a cloud of cherubs at its point. The light falls on Mary’s face and on the small crown of flowers, and everything else stays in a soft half-shadow. It is a painting of majesty without pomp, which is why it sits as well in a living room or a bedroom as in a prayer corner.

📖 Inspiration & Story

Diego Velázquez (1599 to 1660), court painter to King Philip IV of Spain, painted The Coronation of the Virgin around 1635 to 1636, probably for the oratory of Queen Isabel of Bourbon in the royal palace of Madrid: a queen’s picture of the Queen of Heaven. It is today in the Museo del Prado. The Coronation is the last of the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary: after her Assumption, Mary is crowned in heaven by the Trinity, the image behind the title the Church gives her every Easter in the Regina Caeli prayer and every evening in the Hail Holy Queen. The crown is made not of gold but of flowers, a sign that Mary is honoured for her humility, the handmaid of the Lord raised above the angels.
