Hail Holy Queen Prayer Poster

Please note: this listing is for the unframed print only. The frames shown in the photographs are for display purposes and are not included.

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. For nearly a thousand years these words have closed the day in monasteries, been sung by sailors at nightfall and ended the Rosary in Catholic homes: the Hail Holy Queen, the Salve Regina. Here the whole prayer is set as a page from a medieval book of hours, with a great gold initial on lapis blue, a border of red and blue flowers and gold acanthus, and the crowned Virgin holding the Christ Child in a starry medallion, so that the prayer your family says every evening has its place on the wall.

✨Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?

Everything on the page follows the prayer. The full traditional English text is here, from “Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy” to “O sweet Virgin Mary”, in three parts, each opened by a painted initial, then the versicle and response picked out in red: “Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.” In the medallion at the left, Mary wears the crown the prayer gives her and holds out the Child it asks to see, the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus, so that the image and the words say the same thing. The lettering is large and clear, made to be read across a room and prayed from.

📖 Inspiration & Story

The Salve Regina was written in Latin in the eleventh century. It is most often attributed to Hermann of Reichenau, a monk crippled from birth who lived on an island in Lake Constance; other manuscripts name Bishop Adhemar of Le Puy. By the thirteenth century the Cistercians and the Dominicans sang it in procession every evening after Compline, sailors took it to sea as their night prayer, and Columbus’s crews sang it on October 11, 1492, a few hours before they sighted land. In 1884 Pope Leo XIII added it to the prayers after Low Mass, and today it is the closing prayer of the Rosary. Its history, its Latin text and its meaning line by line are told in our article on the Hail Holy Queen prayer.

The setting is the medieval scriptorium, where monks adorned holy words with gold leaf, vermilion and climbing vines, believing beauty was a fitting servant of a sacred text.
