Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. These are the words Catholics have said on their knees after Communion for seven hundred years, the Anima Christi, the prayer Saint Ignatius of Loyola loved so much that generations believed he wrote it. Set here as a medieval illumination, a great gold and lapis initial, a border of wild roses, cornflowers and songbirds, and Christ as the Man of Sorrows in a roundel, it turns the quietest prayer of the Mass into something a whole family can see every day.

What gives this poster its weight is how little the prayer asks for, and how much. Eleven short lines, each a name and a verb, move through the body of Christ as a pilgrim moves through a church: soul, body, blood, the water from his side, the Passion, and then the wounds themselves, within thy wounds hide me. The full traditional text is here, from “Soul of Christ, sanctify me” to “that with thy saints I may praise thee for ever and ever”, each half opened by a hand-painted initial. In the medallion at the lower left, Christ crowned with thorns shows the wounds the prayer asks to hide in, so that the image and the words say the same thing.

📖 Inspiration & Story

The Anima Christi was written in the early fourteenth century by an author no one has identified. It is found in a manuscript of around 1370 now in the British Library and in the prayer book of Cardinal Pierre de Luxembourg, who died in 1387, and it was carved on a gate of the Alcázar of Seville under Pedro I of Castile. It is often credited to Pope John XXII, without proof.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola, born in 1491, did not write it, but he recommended it again and again in the Spiritual Exercises, and later editions printed it on their opening pages. The Jesuits carried the book and the prayer to every continent, and it became the best known prayer of thanksgiving after Communion in the Catholic world, also prayed before the tabernacle and at the bedside of the dying. The setting is the medieval scriptorium, where monks adorned holy words with gold leaf, vermilion and climbing vines, believing beauty was a fitting servant of a sacred text.
