Saint Francis Xavier stands on a step with his arm out, and the world rearranges itself around him. The blind receive their sight, the sick are lifted, a shrouded corpse sits up among the crowd, and high in the background a pagan idol topples off its pedestal while angels sweep across the sky. Rubens painted the most travelled missionary of the sixteenth century as a force of nature, and the picture has lost none of that charge. Hung in a Christian home it is pure encouragement, a reminder that the gospel was carried to the far side of the world by men who simply went.

This is one of the most ambitious compositions Rubens ever attempted, and its power lies in the way it organises chaos. Dozens of figures crowd the lower half in every attitude of astonishment, yet the tall calm vertical of the saint in black holds the centre and refuses to be swamped, and the architecture rises behind him to give the eye somewhere to rest. The colour does the theological work: the crowd is painted in earth reds and browns, the saint in sober black and white, the heavens in cool blue and silver, so the picture separates the human tumult from the source of the miracle without ever dividing the canvas. Very few artists could paint a hundred people reacting at once and still tell you exactly where to look.

📖 Inspiration & Story

Rubens produced this altarpiece in 1617 and 1618 for the Jesuit church in Antwerp, as the companion to his Miracle of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, working from an oil sketch that survives and shows how completely he had solved the composition before touching the large canvas. Xavier had died in 1552 on a Chinese island and had not yet been canonised when the painting was finished, so the miracles shown here were being argued rather than commemorated, part of the Jesuit campaign that would raise him to the altars in 1622. The scene is a deliberate compression of a whole career, gathering into one imagined square the healings and conversions reported from India, Malacca and Japan, with the falling idol standing for the whole missionary claim. Both altarpieces left Antwerp for the imperial collection in Vienna, where they hang in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and they remain the grandest statement the Baroque ever made about the Society of Jesus.
