Saint Cecilia Prayer Poster

Please note: this listing is for the unframed print only. The frames shown in the photographs are for display purposes and are not included.

Here is the prayer for everyone who makes music. The Prayer to Saint Cecilia, Patroness of Musicians asks the Roman martyr who sang in her heart to the Lord on her own wedding day for the grace to make of an art a prayer and of a talent an offering, to be kept from vanity in performance and from discouragement in failure. Set as a medieval illumination with a gold initial and a border where music notes hide among the blossoms, it is made for the wall above a piano, in a practice room, in a choir loft, or in the hands of a musician who is given it as a gift.

✨Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?

What makes this one land is that it prays for the things musicians actually struggle with. Not glory, but the two failures that bracket every performing life: the vanity that comes with playing well and the discouragement that comes with playing badly. Cecilia sits in her medallion at the lower left, bent over her little pipe organ with the score open in front of her, and the border carries her flowers and her notation together. Each stanza opens with a painted initial and closes with a fine gold rule, and the warm parchment tone gives the whole thing the honest look of a page that has been turned many times.

📖 Inspiration & Story

Saint Cecilia was a Roman noblewoman of the second or third century who had vowed her virginity to God and was married against her will to a pagan named Valerian; her legend tells that as the wedding musicians played, she sang in her heart to the Lord alone, and that she converted her husband, who was granted the sight of the angel that crowned them both with roses and lilies, before all three were martyred for burying the Christian dead. A single line from her sixth-century Acts, cantantibus organis, “while the instruments played”, is what made her the patroness of music, and by a slight and beautiful misreading of that line later painters put the organ into her own hands and left it there.

The prayer printed here is a contemporary one written for musicians rather than an ancient text, which is why it speaks of composers and performance and the fear of failing. What is medieval is the craft around it: the illuminated initial worked like beaten gold, the lapis and vermilion blossoms, the blackletter script and the roundel portrait, all borrowed from the scriptorium where scribes believed a holy text deserved gold leaf.

Her tomb was opened in 1599 and her body found incorrupt, a wonder Stefano Maderno carved into the marble that still lies beneath her altar in Trastevere; and her feast on 22 November is still marked by concerts in her honour across the Christian world.
