Saint Jude Thaddeus was one of the Twelve, a kinsman of Jesus and the author of the short, fierce New Testament letter that ends with the great blessing to him “who is able to keep you from falling”; he preached in Mesopotamia and Persia with Simon the Zealot, and was martyred there. For centuries he was the forgotten apostle, invoked by almost no one, because his name was too close to Judas Iscariot’s and the faithful were afraid of praying to the wrong man, and it is from that long neglect that his patronage grew: as the tradition has it, a saint nobody troubled would be all the more eager to help, so those in desperate straits began calling on him, and he answered.

This canvas paints him in the French academic manner of the nineteenth century, the style of the great religious salon portraits, where careful anatomy and a luminous, atmospheric sky were used to make holiness look like something that could actually walk into a room.
