Description
Mary, Untier of Knots by Johann Georg Schmidtner canvas reproduction
Bring home a faithful reproduction of one of the most beloved Marian devotions in the world: Mary, Untier of Knots (also known as Our Lady Undoer of Knots), patiently loosening the tangles of a long white ribbon while angels look on. For anyone carrying a knot they cannot untangle alone, in marriage, family, health, or faith, this quiet, luminous image is a promise that no tangle is beyond her patient hands.
✨ Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?
Schmidtner’s composition is a masterclass in gentle drama: two angels present either end of a single ribbon, its many knots winding down the canvas, while Mary, crowned with twelve stars, standing on a crescent moon, the Holy Spirit descending above her, works each one loose with calm, unhurried hands. Surrounding cherubim watch in quiet wonder. It is devotional art built entirely around a single, hopeful verb: untying.
📖 Inspiration & Story
The original painting, Maria Knotenlöserin, was completed around 1700 by the German Baroque painter Johann Georg Schmidtner for the church of St. Peter am Perlach in Augsburg, Bavaria. It was commissioned by Hieronymus Ambrosius Langenmantel in gratitude for the reconciliation of his grandparents, Wolfgang Langenmantel and Sophia Rieger, whose troubled marriage had been restored after a Jesuit priest, Fr. Jakob Rem, prayed over a ribbon and symbolically “untied” the knots of their discord.
For nearly three centuries the devotion remained largely local to Bavaria, admired but little known beyond Augsburg. That changed in 1986, when a young Argentine Jesuit named Jorge Mario Bergoglio, studying in Germany, encountered the painting and brought a reproduction back to Buenos Aires. There, as María Desatanudos, the devotion spread rapidly across Latin America, embraced by families who saw in her patient hands a hope for their own impossible situations.
When Bergoglio became Pope Francis in 2013, the image he had carried home from Augsburg became known across the entire Catholic world. Today “Our Lady Undoer of Knots” is one of the most requested Marian devotions in the United States, her feast kept by many parishes on September 28th. This canvas brings that same original Baroque composition, angels, ribbon, crescent moon and all, into your own home, exactly as Schmidtner painted it more than three hundred years ago.
