Jesse lies asleep along the bottom of the panel, his head on his hand, and from his side a slender tree rises through a field of pure gold. In its branches, each in a blue medallion, sit the kings of Judah: David with his harp, Solomon holding the temple he built, three more crowned ancestors, then the Virgin with her hands crossed on her breast, and at the summit Christ in majesty, blessing, the book in his hand. It is the family tree of the Son of God, and the oldest one in Western art.

The picture works because it is a diagram and a devotional image at once, and it never lets either side win. The gold ground flattens everything into a single plane, so the eye climbs the tree exactly as the genealogy is meant to be read, from the sleeping man at the bottom to the blessing figure at the top. The medallions keep every ancestor the same size and the same distance apart, which is what gives the panel its calm. Only two things break the pattern, the green mass of Jesse’s cloak at the foot and the almond of light around Christ at the summit, and between them the whole of salvation history is laid out on one sheet.

📖 Inspiration & Story

The subject comes from a single verse of Isaiah, written when the dynasty of David had been cut down to a stump: a shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. Medieval readers took the image literally and made a picture of it, and in doing so invented the visual family tree, the ancestor of every genealogical chart drawn since. The earliest full example appears around 1144 in the abbey church of Saint-Denis, in a window commissioned by Abbot Suger, and within a generation the composition had spread across the cathedrals of France, into Chartres, then across Europe into manuscripts, embroidery, carved screens and painted ceilings. Its logic is the logic of the first chapter of Matthew, which opens the New Testament with fourteen generations, then fourteen more, then fourteen again, insisting that the incarnation happened inside a real human lineage. In many versions the Virgin occupies the last branch before Christ, which is precisely what the Latin pun invited, virga the shoot and virgo the virgin. The devotion survives today mostly in Advent, where families hang a symbol on a Jesse Tree each day of December to walk the same genealogy from Adam to the manger.
