Raphael (1483–1520), one of the greatest masters of the Italian Renaissance, painted Transfiguration during the final years of his life. It was still in his studio when he died suddenly at age 37. The painting was placed above his coffin during his funeral, a fitting tribute to his mastery and devotion.

The upper register of the painting captures the Transfiguration event as described in the Gospels (Matthew 17, Mark 9, Luke 9). Christ is shown in full divine radiance, fulfilling the Law and the Prophets through the presence of Moses and Elijah. The lower portion, with its writhing figures, reflects the fallen world : the pain, confusion, and search for healing.

What makes Transfiguration so powerful is its dual message: the light of Christ is not distant or detached. It reaches down into human brokenness. The boy’s uplifted face reflects both agony and hope, pointing to the answer found only in Christ.
