The Guardian Angel by Bernhard Plockhorst

Description

The Guardian Angel by Bernhard Plockhorst canvas reproduction

Two small children walk along the edge of a cliff at dusk, one reaching out toward a butterfly, the other bending to pick wild flowers, and neither of them sees the drop beneath their bare feet. Behind them, unseen, a great angel in white and blue spreads both arms to keep them from falling. The Guardian Angel by Bernhard Plockhorst is the guardian angel that generations of Christian families hung above a child’s bed, and it says in one glance what the bedtime prayer says in words: Angel of God, my guardian dear, ever this night be at my side.

✨ Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?

What makes the painting so loved is its quiet suspense. The children are not afraid, because they cannot see the danger; only we can, and only we can see the angel. Plockhorst keeps the composition simple: a long diagonal from the angel’s open wings down to the children’s feet on the rock, the white of the robes against the dark leaves, and a band of sunset on the left where the cliff falls away. The blue mantle, the gold circlet in the angel’s hair and the flowers in the children’s hands give it the warmth of a picture made for a home rather than a church, which is exactly where it has always hung: in nurseries, bedrooms and family hallways.

📖 Inspiration & Story

Bernhard Plockhorst (1825 to 1907) was a German painter of religious subjects, trained in Germany and in Paris, whose gentle images of Christ, the Good Shepherd and the angels were reproduced across Europe and America. His Guardian Angel, painted in the late nineteenth century, illustrates the words of Jesus about little children, “in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father” (Matthew 18:10), and the promise of Psalm 91, “he shall give his angels charge over thee”. The danger in the picture is real but hidden and the angel’s care constant but unseen, which is how the Church describes the guardian angel given to every person from birth, the angel Catholic children greet each night in the Guardian Angel prayer. Printed on holy cards, calendars and nursery pictures, it became one of the best known religious images of the twentieth century, and this reproduction comes from a carefully restored version of the painting, its colours and details cleaned.
