📖 Inspiration & Story

The St. Andrew Christmas Novena was printed with the imprimatur of Michael Augustine Corrigan, Archbishop of New York, on February 6, 1897, and its author has never been identified. It takes its name from Saint Andrew, the first apostle called by Jesus and the one who brought his brother Peter to him, because it begins on his feast, November 30, at the threshold of Advent. Its words return again and again to a single moment, Christ born of the Virgin Mary at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold, the scene that painters such as Geertgen tot Sint Jans and Correggio filled with the light of the Child alone.
