📖 Inspiration & Story

The original San Damiano Cross is a large Romanesque painted crucifix made around the year 1100 by an unknown Umbrian artist working in the Italo-Byzantine “icon cross” tradition, and it hung in the little ruined church of San Damiano outside Assisi where, in 1205, the young Francis knelt in prayer and heard the crucified Christ tell him three times, “Go, Francis, repair my house, which as you see is falling into ruin.” Rather than dwelling on suffering, the icon depicts Christ as alive and glorified, his serene open eyes and radiant halo proclaiming victory over death, while around him gather the witnesses of the Passion and, at the very top, the risen Lord is welcomed into heaven by a chorus of angels. When the Poor Clares left San Damiano they carried the cross with them, and it has been venerated in the Basilica of Santa Chiara in Assisi ever since, becoming one of the most beloved devotional images in the whole Franciscan world.
