Saint Rita of Cascia Fine Art Poster – The Rose and the Thorn
Please note: this listing is for the unframed print only. The frames shown in the photographs are for display purposes and are not included.
Saint Rita is shown close, head slightly bowed, in the black veil and white wimple of the Augustinian nuns, against a gold ground worked with fine rays and covered in the crackle of an old panel. One hand holds a single red rose at the height of her heart; the other rests flat on her breast. On her forehead, small and dark, the wound of the thorn. Two signs, one of them a flower and one of them a scar, and between them the whole of a difficult life.
✨ Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?
This is a portrait that refuses drama, and it gains everything by it. There is no landscape, no crucifix, no attribute lying on a ledge, only a face turned three quarters down and a single flower, so the picture has one colour event in it and the eye goes straight there. The black of the habit takes up half the surface and makes the gold behave like light rather than decoration. Painted in the manner of an early Renaissance devotional panel, crackle and all, it has the quiet of something that has been prayed in front of for centuries.
📖 Inspiration & Story
Rita was born around 1381 at Roccaporena in Umbria and married young to a violent man, by most accounts against her wish to enter religion. She spent eighteen years in that marriage, bore two sons, and was widowed when her husband was murdered in a feud; when the boys began to talk of avenging him she prayed that they would die rather than become killers, and both were carried off by illness within the year. Alone, she asked three times to enter the Augustinian monastery of Santa Maria Maddalena at Cascia and was three times refused, because the community included relatives of both sides of the feud, and she was admitted only after she had brought the two families to make peace. She lived there forty years. In 1442, praying before a crucifix, she received a single wound in the forehead, as if from one thorn of the crown, which stayed open and gave her the isolation of an incurable smell for the rest of her life. Dying in the January of 1457, she asked a cousin who came to visit for a rose from the garden at Roccaporena; it was the depth of winter and there was one rose in bloom. She was canonised in 1900 and is invoked as the patron of impossible causes, of abuse, and of difficult marriages, and every 22 May roses are brought to be blessed in her basilica at Cascia and in parishes on every continent. This original painting was made for jesuschrist.pictures on a gold ground, and printed as a giclée fine art poster.
