She is the saint about whom almost nothing is known and to whom an extraordinary number of people have turned anyway, and the painting keeps that balance: no story, no setting, only a girl and the two signs that came out of the ground with her.

A dark neutral ground, one figure lit from the upper left, three colours doing everything, the white of the gown, the red of the sash and the roses, the green of the palm. There is no architecture and no landscape to date her or place her, which is honest, because nobody knows where she came from. The modelling is academic and deliberately soft, the kind of painting the nineteenth century made for chapels, and it suits a devotion that belongs to that century more than to any other. 📖 Inspiration & Story

On 25 May 1802, in the Catacomb of Priscilla in Rome, excavators opened a sealed grave marked with three terracotta tiles reading LUMENA PAXTE CUM FI, rearranged by the finders as Pax tecum Filumena, peace be with you Philomena, and incised with an anchor, arrows, a palm and a lily. Inside were the bones of a girl of about thirteen and a vial of what was taken for blood. The relics were given in 1805 to a priest from Mugnano del Cardinale near Naples, and from the moment they arrived the reports began: cures, conversions, and within a few decades a shrine that drew pilgrims from across Europe. Her advocates were not marginal figures. Pauline Jaricot, founder of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, credited her recovery to Philomena in 1835; the Curé of Ars, Saint John Vianney, attributed his own miracles to her and built her a chapel; three popes approved her cult, and Gregory XVI called her the Wonder-Worker. In 1961 her feast was removed from the universal calendar because the historical foundation could not be established, and the inscription is now generally read as reused material from an earlier burial. The devotion did not stop. The shrine at Mugnano is still open, the confraternity still active, and she remains one of the clearest cases in the calendar of a saint sustained entirely by the people who prayed to her.
