Meet Saint Malachy of Armagh at the end of the road, in the one place he had asked to stay. He lies on a low pallet in a bare Cistercian infirmary at Clairvaux, his mitre and crozier set down on the stone floor beside him, and Bernard of Clairvaux kneels in white to hold his head. Three monks stand behind in silence and a single shaft of light crosses the room. It is a picture about friendship at the end of a life, and it is unexpectedly consoling.

The composition works because almost nothing happens in it. Two haloes, one lying and one kneeling, hold the centre; the three standing Cistercians are a wall of quiet white behind them; the discarded mitre in the foreground says everything about what a bishop takes with him. The palette is stone grey, ivory and deep green, warmed only by the gold of the vestment orphreys and the light from the window. A Celtic interlace border closes it in.

📖 Inspiration & Story

Malachy was born at Armagh in 1094 and became its archbishop in a church that had drifted into hereditary abbacies and local custom, which he spent his life dragging back into line with Rome. Travelling to Rome he stopped at Clairvaux, fell in love with the place and asked to remain; he was refused and sent home, but Cistercian monks went with him, and Mellifont, the first Cistercian house in Ireland, was founded in 1142. He died at Clairvaux on a second journey in 1148, in the arms of Bernard, who wrote his life and preached at his funeral, producing one of the warmest biographies of the Middle Ages. The Prophecy of the Popes attributed to him first appears in print in 1595, four hundred and fifty years after his death, and almost no historian defends the attribution.
