📖 Inspiration & Story

Lucy died at Syracuse in Sicily around the year 304, in the last and worst of the Roman persecutions under Diocletian, and she was venerated so early and so widely that her name entered the Roman Canon of the Mass alongside Agatha and Cecilia, where it is still said today. The Acts written later tell that she was a young Christian of a wealthy family, that she took her mother to Agatha’s tomb at Catania and obtained a healing there, that she then gave away the dowry meant for her marriage, and that the suitor she refused denounced her to the prefect. The eyes on a dish, which have identified her in art since the Middle Ages, appear nowhere in the earliest accounts; they grew out of her name, lux, light, and made her the patron of the blind and of eyesight. What the sources do agree on is the flame, and it is the flame that travelled: because her feast on 13 December fell on the winter solstice in the old Julian calendar, she became the saint of the returning light across northern Europe, and in Sweden the eldest daughter still wears a crown of candles on Santa Lucia morning.
