Saint Charbel kneels in a stone cell with a rosary running through his joined hands, his head bowed, the black Maronite hood pulled forward so that only the white beard and the lined face catch the light. A small oil lamp burns on the ledge beside a rough wooden cross, and it is the only light in the picture. Nothing happens in this painting, and that is the point: twenty-three years of a life in which nothing happened, and out of which came the most requested intercessor in the Middle East.

📖 Inspiration & Story

Youssef Antoun Makhlouf was born in 1828 in Bekaa Kafra, the highest village in Lebanon, the fifth child of a mule driver who died when the boy was three. At twenty-three he left home without telling his mother, entered the Lebanese Maronite Order, and took the name Charbel after a second century Antiochene martyr. He spent sixteen years in community at the monastery of Saint Maron in Annaya and then, in 1875, was allowed to withdraw to the hermitage of Saints Peter and Paul above it, where he lived for twenty-three years on one meal a day, slept on a straw mat with a wooden log for a pillow, and spoke almost not at all. He was struck down while celebrating the liturgy on 16 December 1898 and died on Christmas Eve. Within months the villagers reported an extraordinary light over his grave, and when the tomb was opened his body was found incorrupt and exuding a fluid that has been collected ever since; the exhumations were repeated and documented into the twentieth century. Paul VI beatified him in 1965 during the Second Vatican Council and canonised him in 1977, and the shrine at Annaya now receives Christians and Muslims alike, with thousands of healings recorded in its registers.
