Saint Bride by John Duncan, painted in Edinburgh in 1913, is the most beautiful image any Irish saint has ever been given. Two angels in robes covered with miniature scenes from the life of Christ carry the girl Brigid low over a green sea, her hands joined, her hair falling loose behind her. Gulls fly beside them and a seal watches from the water. The Hebridean legend says she was carried to Bethlehem on the night of the Nativity, to be present at the birth and to hold the child.

Duncan painted it in tempera on purpose, to get the matte chalky surface of a medieval panel rather than the gloss of oil, and the result is a picture that looks a thousand years older than it is. The wings are impossible reds and greens, the sea is patterned rather than described, and every centimetre of the angels’ robes carries a scene the size of a fingernail. It is the founding image of the Scottish Celtic Revival and it has never been bettered. 📖 Inspiration & Story

John Duncan was born in Dundee in 1866 and became the central painter of the Celtic Revival in Edinburgh, working alongside the sociologist Patrick Geddes in a deliberate attempt to give Scotland and Ireland a visual language of their own drawn from insular manuscripts rather than from the Italian Renaissance. Saint Bride was painted in 1913 in egg tempera on canvas and is one of the treasures of the National Galleries of Scotland. Its subject is not the Irish life of Brigid of Kildare but a Hebridean folk tradition in which she is carried miraculously to the Nativity, a story that let Duncan combine a Scottish seascape, an Irish saint and a Byzantine gold ground in one picture. The embroidered robes, worked in miniature like the panels of a reliquary, are the passage every visitor stops in front of.
