📖 Inspiration & Story

Agatha died at Catania around the year 251, during the persecution under Decius, and like Lucy she was venerated so early that her name was fixed in the Roman Canon of the Mass, where it is still said. The Acts compiled afterwards tell that she was a young woman of a good Sicilian family who had consecrated her virginity, that the Roman prefect Quintianus wanted her and used the persecution as leverage when she refused, and that she was tortured and died in prison. A year after her death, in 253, Etna erupted and the lava came down toward Catania; the people took the veil from her tomb, carried it out to meet the flow, and the flow stopped. That is the event the city has never let go of. The veil is still kept in the cathedral, it has been carried out against eruptions repeatedly across seventeen centuries, and every February the feast of Sant’Agata fills Catania for three days and nights with one of the largest religious processions in the world, several hundred thousand people following the silver reliquary bust through the streets. Her attributes in art are the pincers of her torture and the martyr’s palm, and she is invoked against fire, against volcanic eruption, and by bellfounders, whose metal she is said to protect.
