Description

Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Canvas – Mater Dolorosa with the Seven Swords

✨ Our Lady of Seven Sorrows

Our Lady of Seven Sorrows stands with her hands joined and her eyes lowered, a single tear on her cheek, and seven swords fanned out at her heart. She wears the red gown and the deep blue mantle, a white veil close around her face, and behind her a golden halo against a night sky of stars. She is not looking at the swords. She is praying through them, which is the whole meaning of this devotion: a mother who suffered everything a mother can suffer, and kept faith.

✨ Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?

The seven swords are the hardest element to paint well, because they can so easily turn into an emblem pinned onto a portrait. Here they open like the rays of a fan from one point over the heart, silver blades and gold hilts, and the rest of the picture is kept utterly still so that they carry their full weight. The face is young and composed, the grief held in the lowered lids and the one tear rather than in any contortion. The colours are the traditional ones, blue for her queenship and red for her humanity, set against lapis and gold in the academic manner. It is a Mater Dolorosa for a home rather than a church: it asks for prayer, not pity.

📖 Inspiration & Story

The devotion begins with a prophecy. When Mary and Joseph presented the infant Jesus in the Temple, the old man Simeon took him in his arms and told his mother: and a sword will pierce your own soul too (Luke 2:35). Christian tradition counted seven such swords across her life: the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the child Jesus in the Temple, the meeting with her Son on the way to Calvary, the Crucifixion, the taking down from the Cross, and the burial. The devotion was carried above all by the Servites, the Order of the Servants of Mary founded in Florence in 1233 by seven merchants who left their trade to live on Monte Senario, and by the Stabat Mater, the thirteenth century hymn of the Mother standing at the Cross. At the end of the fifteenth century a Flemish priest, Jan van Coudenberghe, founded confraternities of the Seven Sorrows, and it is from there that the image of the heart pierced by seven swords spread across Europe and then to Spain and Latin America, where the Dolorosa is carried in procession every Holy Week. Pius VII extended the feast to the whole Church in 1814, in thanksgiving for his return from captivity under Napoleon, and since 1913 it has been kept on 15 September, the day after the Exaltation of the Cross. It is also remembered on the Friday of Sorrows, a week before Good Friday. This original painting was made for jesuschrist.pictures with all seven swords shown, because each one is a mystery to be prayed.
