O Mother of Perpetual Help, behold at your feet a poor sinner who has recourse to you and confides in you. These are the words millions of Catholics have prayed every Wednesday for over a century, the traditional prayer to Our Lady of Perpetual Help that the Redemptorists carried to every continent. Set here as a medieval illumination, gold initial, painted border, the miraculous icon herself in a roundel, it turns a familiar devotion into something worth looking at, and puts the Mother of Mercy where a family can see her.
✨Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?
What gives this poster its weight is the plainness of the prayer it carries. It does not ask for prosperity or for signs; it asks for mercy, for refuge, for a hand stretched out, and above all for the grace never to be separated from her Son, which is the one petition that contains every other. The full text is here, from “be, then, my refuge and my hope” to “never let me lose my God”, each stanza opened by a hand-painted initial and closed with a fine gold rule. The icon sits in her medallion at the lower left, the Child’s hands clasped in hers, and the warm parchment ground makes the whole page feel like something handed down.
📖 Inspiration & Story
The icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a Byzantine image painted on walnut, probably on Crete in the fifteenth century, of the type the Greeks call the Theotokos of the Passion: the Christ Child has seen the instruments of his coming death in the hands of the archangels Michael and Gabriel and has run to his mother so fast that his sandal hangs loose from his foot. It reached Rome in 1499, was lost when Napoleon’s troops destroyed its church in 1798, and resurfaced in 1863 when a Redemptorist historian recognised it from a sermon he had heard as a boy.
In 1866 Pius IX handed the icon to the Redemptorists with a charge that shaped the devotion ever since, “Make her known throughout the world”, and this prayer is how they did it: it travelled with their missionaries and became the heart of the perpetual novena, above all the Wednesday devotion at Baclaran in the Philippines, which still draws tens of thousands of people in a single day, one of the largest weekly gatherings of prayer anywhere on earth. Her feast falls on 27 June.
The prayer is the traditional Redemptorist text; the setting is the medieval scriptorium, where monks adorned holy words with gold leaf, vermilion and climbing vines, believing beauty was a fitting servant of a sacred text.
