Mount Carmel is a ridge above the bay of Haifa, the mountain where Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal and where, after the drought, his servant saw a small cloud rise from the sea, read since the Middle Ages as a figure of the Virgin. Latin hermits settled there during the Crusades and became the Carmelite order, and when the Muslim reconquest forced them west into Europe they arrived as an order without a founder, a rule under suspicion, and no clear place in the Church. The tradition holds that on 16 July 1251, at Cambridge, the Virgin appeared to their English prior Simon Stock holding the scapular and promising her protection to those who wore it and died in it. The scapular itself is the plainest of objects, two small rectangles of brown wool joined by cords and worn over the shoulders, a miniature of the working apron that monks wore over the habit, so that the sign of the promise is literally a piece of work clothing. The devotion spread through every class of Europe and became one of the few that crossed freely between cloister and cottage. The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on 16 July is still kept with processions from Chile to Sicily to Kerala, and in Naples and Palermo the Madonna del Carmine draws crowds that fill entire quarters.
