Our Lady of Grace stands on the globe with her hands open and turned outward, and from each palm the light falls in long shafts toward the viewer. She wears the white gown and the blue mantle, twelve stars circle her head, and beneath her bare feet the serpent lies pinned against the sphere of the world. Six cherubim watch from the cloud on either side. It is the gentlest of all the great Marian images, because nothing in it is asked of you: the hands are already open, the light is already falling, and the only thing left to do is stand where it lands.

📖 Inspiration & Story

On the night of 18 July 1830, a twenty-four year old novice of the Daughters of Charity named Catherine Labouré was woken in her convent on the rue du Bac in Paris and led to the chapel, where she said the Virgin spoke with her for two hours. In a second apparition that November, Catherine described Mary standing on a globe with rays streaming from rings on her fingers, framed by the words O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee, and she was told to have a medal struck to that design. She was also told what the rays meant: they are the graces Mary pours out on those who ask, and the stones that send out no light are the graces nobody thought to ask for. The medal appeared in 1832, spread through a Paris ravaged by cholera, and the people renamed it themselves, the Miraculous Medal. The iconography behind it is far older: the woman clothed with the sun and crowned with twelve stars comes from Revelation 12, and the serpent crushed underfoot from Genesis 3, so that the image gathers the beginning and the end of Scripture into a single standing figure. Catherine told no one but her confessor and spent the next forty-six years looking after the elderly and the poultry yard at Reuilly; her identity became public only after her death in 1876.
