Few images in the Christian world are loved the way the Black Madonna of Częstochowa is loved. For six centuries she has hung at Jasna Góra in southern Poland, her dark face marked by two long scars, the Child in her arm and the Polish nation at her feet, and pilgrims still walk for days across the country to stand in front of her. 📖 Inspiration & Story

The icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa is a Byzantine-type Hodegetria, “she who shows the way”, painted on a limewood panel by an unknown hand; pious tradition credits it to Saint Luke the Evangelist, who is said to have painted it on the cedar table of the Holy Family, while art historians place the panel as we now see it somewhere between the sixth and fourteenth centuries, repainted more than once. It arrived at Jasna Góra in 1382 with Prince Ladislaus of Opole, and in 1430 Hussite raiders plundered the monastery and slashed the Virgin’s face; the legend says the cart carrying the icon away would not move, and that when the raider struck her twice more he fell dead. The scars were repainted again and again and kept reappearing through the overpaint, so the restorers finally gave up and cut them deliberately into the new surface, which is why she still carries them today.

Her fame was sealed in 1655, when a few hundred defenders held Jasna Góra against a vastly larger Swedish army during “the Deluge”, a deliverance credited to her, after which King John Casimir crowned her Queen and Protector of Poland in the cathedral of Lwów. She has been the emblem of Polish identity through the partitions, through the Nazi occupation and through the Solidarity years, when Lech Wałęsa signed the Gdańsk accords with a Częstochowa pen and wore her image on his lapel, and John Paul II, who came to her as a young man from nearby Kraków, returned to her as pope again and again.

The blue mantle sown with gold fleurs-de-lis came from an Anjou royal gift, the dark tone from centuries of soot, oxidised varnish and age deepening on the panel, and her feast falls on 26 August, when Jasna Góra fills with pilgrims who have walked from Warsaw and beyond.
