📖 Inspiration & Story

In the summer of 1830, a novice of the Daughters of Charity named Catherine Labouré was woken in her convent on the rue du Bac in Paris and led to the chapel, where she said the Virgin talked with her for two hours. In a second apparition that November she described Mary standing on a globe, rings on her fingers throwing out beams of light, framed by an oval inscription: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. The frame then turned, and she saw the reverse she was to have struck as well, an M surmounted by a cross, with the two hearts of Jesus and Mary below it. She was told what the rays were: the graces poured out on those who ask for them, and the stones that gave no light were the graces nobody had thought to ask for. The first fifteen hundred medals were struck in 1832, in a Paris then losing twenty thousand people to cholera, and the reports of cures and conversions were such that the people renamed the thing themselves: not the medal of the Immaculate Conception, the Miraculous Medal. Over a billion have been made since. Catherine told no one but her confessor, spent forty-six years caring for the elderly at Reuilly, and was identified publicly only after her death in 1876; the doctrine her medal proclaimed twenty-four years early was defined in 1854.
