Christ steps forward out of the darkness in a white garment, the right hand raised in blessing, the left touching the breast where the garment is drawn slightly aside. From that point two rays fall across the picture, one pale and one red, widening as they come toward the viewer. Below his feet, in gold, the five words the whole devotion hangs on: Jesus, I trust in You. It is a painting built to be prayed in front of rather than looked at, which is exactly what was asked for.

Almost everything in this composition is dark, and that is the reason it carries a room. The figure is lit from within rather than from a window, so the white garment and the two rays are the only bright passages, and the eye has nowhere else to go. The gesture is unusually gentle for a Christ in majesty: he is walking toward you, not seated in judgment. Painted in the academic manner, with soft modelling and a warm, almost photographic treatment of the face, it belongs in a bedroom, a prayer corner or beside a sickbed, where images of the Passion would be too hard to live with.

📖 Inspiration & Story

On the evening of 22 February 1931, in the convent of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy at Płock in Poland, a twenty-five year old nun named Faustina Kowalska wrote that Christ appeared to her dressed in white, one hand raised and the other at his breast, with two great rays coming from it, and told her to paint what she saw. She could not paint, and spent three years trying to have it done; the first version was made in 1934 in Vilnius by Eugeniusz Kazimirowski, working from her description under the direction of her confessor Michał Sopoćko, and Faustina wept when she saw it because it was less beautiful than the vision. She was told what the rays meant: the pale ray is the water that makes souls righteous, the red ray is the blood that is the life of souls, the two that came from the pierced side in the nineteenth chapter of John. Faustina died of tuberculosis in 1938 at thirty-three. In 1959 the Holy Office banned the devotion outright, largely on the strength of bad translations of her diary; the ban was lifted in 1978 after years of work by the archbishop of Kraków, Karol Wojtyła, who as John Paul II canonised her in 2000 and made the Sunday after Easter the Feast of Divine Mercy for the whole Church.
