The Crucifixion by Giotto

Description

The Crucifixion by Giotto canvas reproduction

The Crucifixion by Giotto is a large altarpiece conceived by Giotto and painted with his workshop in Naples, where he worked for King Robert of Anjou between 1328 and 1332. It hangs today in the Louvre, in the Salon Carré, among the founding works of Italian painting.

Christ hangs at the centre between the two thieves, his thin body pale against a night sky. Angels in red and blue wheel around the cross in grief, one of them gathering the soul of the good thief while a dark figure seizes the soul of the other. Below, the crowd divides as the Gospels divide it: on the left the Virgin fainting in the arms of the holy women, Mary Magdalene kneeling at the foot of the cross with her arms raised; in the centre and on the right the soldiers on horseback with their lances and banners; and in the foreground the soldiers dividing Christ’s seamless garment among themselves (John 19:23-24).

That dark sky is not the original. The panel was painted on a gold ground, as Giotto’s altarpieces were, and at an early date, perhaps from the fifteenth century, the gold was scraped away and replaced with a landscape and a night sky. The result is strangely modern: the three pale bodies stand out against the darkness that, the Gospels say, came over the whole land at the ninth hour.

Giotto di Bondone reintroduced weight and human emotion into sacred painting, and his late workshop carried that language to southern Italy. Here grief is told in gestures anyone can read, the embrace that holds up the Virgin, the Magdalene’s raised arms, the angels bent over the cross, so that the Passion appears as an event witnessed by real people rather than a distant symbol.

The panel was unknown to the public until it appeared at auction in Paris in 1999, when the Louvre acquired it. The museum catalogues it as a work of Giotto’s workshop from his Neapolitan period, one of the few paintings to survive from the years he spent in Naples.
