The Burial of the Count of Orgaz by El Greco

Description

The Burial of the Count of Orgaz by El Greco canvas reproduction

Toledo, 1323. At the funeral of the lord of Orgaz, Saint Stephen and Saint Augustine come down from heaven and lay him in his tomb with their own hands, while the noblemen of the city look on in black and white ruffs. Above them the clouds open: an angel carries the count’s soul toward Christ in glory, with the Virgin and Saint John the Baptist pleading at his side. The Burial of the Count of Orgaz is El Greco’s masterpiece, earth and heaven on a single canvas.

✨ Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?

Few paintings hold so much in one image. Below, a funeral of breathtaking realism, with gold vestments, polished armour and the faces of real men of Toledo. Above, a vision of heaven in silver and blue, where the elongated saints of El Greco crowd around Christ. The reproduction keeps the arched top of the original on a deep black ground, as it appears in its chapel, so nothing of the composition is cut. It brings a powerful meditation on death, hope and the communion of saints to a living room, a study or a prayer corner, and it is a meaningful gift for a lover of sacred art, a priest or a family remembering a loved one.

📖 Inspiration & Story

El Greco (1541 to 1614), the Cretan-born master of Toledo, painted The Burial of the Count of Orgaz between 1586 and 1588 for the parish church of Santo Tomé, where it still hangs above the count’s tomb. Nearly five metres high, it filled the townspeople with wonder from the day it was unveiled, because they recognised the leading men of their own city among the mourners. The boy in the lower left corner is the painter’s son, Jorge Manuel, and on the handkerchief in his pocket El Greco signed his name in Greek, with the date of the boy’s birth.
