The Lamb stands on a flowering hillside inside an arch of deep blue scattered with gold stars, a cruciform halo behind its head and the banner of the Resurrection over its shoulder. From the wound in its side the blood falls in a thin steady line into a gold chalice set on the grass. Around the whole scene runs the border of a Flemish book of hours: acanthus, vine leaves, bunches of black grapes on burnished gold, with two kneeling angels in the lower corners. It is a page from a prayer book, enlarged to the size of a wall.

Ecce Agnus Dei, behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world: John the Baptist says it in the first chapter of the fourth gospel, and the whole of Christian iconography follows from those five words. The Lamb bearing a cross-staff and banner is the victorious Lamb of Revelation 5, slain and standing, and the chalice catching the blood makes the connection the liturgy makes every day, since the priest still says Agnus Dei immediately before communion. The motif is everywhere in medieval art, in the apse mosaics of Rome, on Romanesque tympana, on the tiny enamelled plaques carried as pilgrim badges, and it reaches its greatest statement in 1432 in the Ghent Altarpiece, where van Eyck sets the Lamb on an altar in a green meadow with all the ranks of the redeemed converging on it. The border language used here belongs to the generation after him, the Ghent-Bruges school of the late fifteenth century, whose illuminators scattered acanthus, strawberries and grapes across gold grounds in the margins of books of hours made for private prayer.
