📖 Inspiration & Story

Marie-Françoise-Thérèse Martin was born at Alençon in 1873, the youngest of nine children of whom four died in infancy, and lost her mother at four. At fourteen she asked Leo XIII, during a pilgrimage audience in Rome, for permission to enter Carmel early; she was carried out by the Swiss Guard and admitted the following year at fifteen. She spent nine years in the Carmel of Lisieux doing laundry, painting holy cards and looking after a difficult elderly sister, and contracted tuberculosis at twenty-three. What she left was a manuscript written under obedience, published in 1898 as Histoire d’une âme, in which she set out what she called the Little Way: that holiness is not reserved for the heroic but is available to anyone who does small things with love, and that one may go to God as a child rather than as an athlete. The book was translated within a decade into dozens of languages and the letters began arriving at Lisieux by the sackful. She had said she would spend her heaven doing good on earth and would let fall a shower of roses, and the roses became her emblem. Pius XI canonised her in 1925, twenty-eight years after her death, and named her patron of the missions in 1927 alongside Francis Xavier, who spent his life crossing oceans while she never left her cloister; John Paul II made her a Doctor of the Church in 1997.
