📖 Inspiration & Story

Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the late fourth century, the son of a deacon, and was carried off to Ireland by raiders at about sixteen. Six years herding animals in the west made him, by his own account in the Confessio, a man who prayed a hundred times a day; he escaped, walked two hundred miles to a ship, went home, trained as a cleric, and returned as a bishop to the country that had enslaved him. The shamrock and the banished snakes are late medieval additions, not his own words, but they carry a real memory of a mission that faced down a druidic priesthood. This painting sets those attributes in the landscape of his captivity rather than in a church, because that is where the story actually happened.
