The Irish abbot stands barefoot in an undyed habit before the throne of a Frankish king, one hand raised, refusing to bless the king’s sons. The boys watch from beside the chair, the court waits in the shadows, and the king turns away. He was expelled from Burgundy for this, walked the length of France under guard, and crossed the Alps in his seventies to start again.

Everything in this composition is a contrast, and none of it is subtle, which is right for the subject. The saint is pale, upright and empty-handed except for a wooden staff; the king is deep red and gold and seated, and he is the one who looks away. The picture is staged flat and frieze-like, the way a medieval panel would stage it, and only Columbanus carries a halo. A Celtic interlace border encloses the scene.

📖 Inspiration & Story

Columbanus was born in Leinster around 543 and spent some thirty years at Bangor in County Down before leaving Ireland around 590, in his fifties, for the Irish exile-for-Christ that had no return. In Burgundy he founded Annegray, Luxeuil and Fontaines, wrote the most severe monastic rule of the early Middle Ages, and brought to the continent the Irish practice of private repeatable confession that became the sacrament as Catholics have known it since. He argued in writing with Pope Gregory the Great and with Pope Boniface IV, refused to change the Irish date of Easter, and refused to bless the illegitimate sons of Theuderic II, which cost him Burgundy. He crossed the Alps at about seventy-one, founded Bobbio in the Apennines in 614, and died there the following year; Robert Schuman later called him the patron saint of those who seek to build a united Europe.
