Meet Saint Brigid of Kildare in the middle of the miracle that founded her monastery. She asked the King of Leinster for as much land as her cloak would cover; he laughed and agreed; and the cloak kept going. Here it is still going, a river of blue-grey wool pouring across the Curragh to the horizon, while the king reins back his white horse at the edge of the plain and two of her nuns kneel behind her. Ireland’s only woman patron saint, at the moment she out-negotiated a king.

What makes this picture is the cloak, and the decision to paint it as water rather than as cloth. It leaves her shoulders as a garment and reaches the bottom of the frame as a tide, which is what turns a property dispute into a miracle in front of you. Brigid herself is almost still: arms open, face lifted, the only vertical in a wide horizontal composition. The king, small and red on his white horse, gives the scale. A Celtic interlace border encloses the plain.

📖 Inspiration & Story

Brigid was born around 451 at Faughart in County Louth to a chieftain of Leinster and a Christian bondwoman, and the earliest stories about her are all about giving away things that were not hers to give, including her father’s jewelled sword to a beggar. Around 480 she founded the double monastery of Cill Dara, the church of the oak, and governed both its women and its men; a fire was kept burning in her enclosure and tended by nineteen nuns in turn, a practice Gerald of Wales still found running when he visited in the 1180s and which was only extinguished in 1540. She is one of the three patron saints of Ireland with Patrick and Columba, and the only woman among them; since 2023 her feast on 1 February has been an Irish public holiday, the first named for a woman. Her name, her feast day and most of her attributes are shared with a pre-Christian goddess, and historians have never agreed on where one ends and the other begins.
