Meet Saint Columba, Colum Cille, the dove of the church, on the shore of the island he chose when he could no longer stay in Ireland. He holds a jewelled gospel book against his chest with one hand and offers the other, open, to a white dove coming down to it. Behind him the Hebridean sea runs out to low islands under a rose and gold sky. Both of his emblems are here, and both were costly: the book started a war, and the exile that followed converted a kingdom.

This is a picture about a man and two objects, and it gives each of them room. The book is the densest thing in the frame, worked in gold and enamel; the dove is the lightest, almost weightless against the sky; Columba stands between them in white and dark blue, tonsured across the front of the head in the Irish manner rather than the Roman. The evening light does the rest. A Celtic interlace border holds the whole composition like the carpet page of a gospel book.

📖 Inspiration & Story

Columba was born in 521 at Gartan in County Donegal, of the royal Ui Neill, and could in principle have been considered for the high kingship. He founded Derry and Durrow before he was forty, then copied a psalter belonging to Finnian of Moville without permission and refused to surrender the copy, which produced the ruling usually called the first copyright judgment in Europe: to every cow its calf, and to every book its copy. His kinsmen fought the battle of Cul Dreimhne over it in 561, and in 563 Columba left for Iona with twelve companions and never lived in Ireland again. From that island his monastic family carried Christianity across Scotland and northern England and made, around the year 800, the Book of Kells.
