📖 Inspiration & Story

Brendan of Clonfert was born around 484 near Fenit in County Kerry and founded the great monastery of Clonfert in County Galway around 559. What made him famous across medieval Europe was the Navigatio Sancti Brendani, a Latin voyage narrative written some three centuries after his death, in which he sails west for seven years with fourteen monks, celebrates Easter on the back of a whale, passes a column of crystal in the open sea, and reaches the Land of Promise of the Saints. Over one hundred and twenty five manuscripts of it survive, and Saint Brendan’s Isle stayed on Atlantic charts into the eighteenth century. In 1976 and 1977 Tim Severin built a boat of ox hides to the description in the text and sailed it from Kerry to Newfoundland, which proved the voyage possible even if it did not prove it happened.
