Saint John of the Cross (San Juan de la Cruz): Baroque Canvas Wall Art
Price range: $39.90 through $99.90
Description
✨ Saint John of the Cross
Saint John of the Cross stands in the cream mantle and brown habit of the Discalced Carmelites, holding a small wooden cross and a closed book, his face lifted into a light that comes from somewhere outside the picture. No portrait of him was ever painted from life, so this original work reaches for the man the documents describe: very small, very poor, nine months in a cell in Toledo, and the finest poet in the Spanish language. The eagle at his feet is the old emblem of the contemplative who looks straight into the sun. For a prayer corner, a study or a bedside wall, few images say so plainly that the darkness is not the end of the road.
✨ Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?
The painting is built on the Spanish Golden Age formula that suits this saint better than any other: a single figure, a deep neutral ground, and light used sparingly so that the white of the mantle carries almost all of it. There is no vision, no angel, no swoon. The hands are working hands, the face is thin and alert rather than beautiful, and the upward look is steady instead of rapturous, which is exactly the temper of his writing. Painted in the manner of Zurbaran and Ribera, with their taste for coarse cloth and honest faces, it gives a modern room the gravity of a seventeenth century Spanish monastery without any of the theatre.
📖 Inspiration & Story
Juan de Yepes was born at Fontiveros in 1542 into real poverty, worked as a boy in a hospital for incurables, and was recruited by Teresa of Avila in 1567 to extend her Carmelite reform to the friars, taking the name John of the Cross. In December 1577 friars of his own order seized him and held him for nine months in a cell in Toledo barely larger than his body, flogging him publicly, and it was there, on paper smuggled in by a sympathetic jailer, that he composed the first stanzas of the Spiritual Canticle and the poem that begins En una noche oscura. His dark night is not depression but a purification, a light too strong for the eye, which is why the poems read as escape narratives rather than laments. Declared a Doctor of the Church in 1926 with the title Doctor mysticus, he left a body of work small enough to read in an afternoon and deep enough to have occupied readers for four centuries, and this original portrait was painted for jesuschrist.pictures to give that quiet, stubborn figure a face.
