Saint Teresa of Avila Interceding for Souls in Purgatory by Peter Paul Rubens canvas reproduction
Most images of Teresa of Avila show her alone in ecstasy. Rubens shows her working. She kneels in the Carmelite habit with her hands open, looking up at the risen Christ who turns toward her and gestures downward, and below them, in the warm dark at the foot of the picture, the souls in purgatory lift their faces and their arms toward the light. It is a painting about intercession, about prayer that is made for somebody else and is answered. In a Christian home it says something a portrait cannot: that the saints are not spectators, and that no one is prayed for alone.
✨ Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?
The picture is built on a single vertical current of mercy. Christ stands with a great sweep of red drapery at the top, Teresa kneels at the middle in cream and black, and the souls occupy the bottom, so the whole surface reads as one movement from heaven to the dead and back. Rubens gives the flesh of the souls his characteristic warmth so that they look alive rather than ghostly, which makes their reaching hands genuinely moving, and he keeps Teresa’s face plain and concentrated instead of transported. It is his tenderest treatment of a Spanish subject, and the smallest gestures carry it: the open palms, the tilt of the head, the hand of Christ already turning toward the ones below.
📖 Inspiration & Story
Rubens painted this panel around 1630 to 1635, in the last decade of his life, after his years as a diplomat had ended and he was working with a freedom and looseness of touch that his earlier altarpieces rarely allowed. Teresa of Avila had been canonised in 1622, in the same ceremony as Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier, and the new Carmelite saint became instantly popular across Catholic Europe, which is why a Flemish master was painting a Spanish nun at all. The subject rests on the doctrine of the communion of saints and on Teresa’s own writings, where she describes praying for particular souls and being shown their release, so the picture illustrates a claim she made about herself rather than a legend attached to her afterwards. The painting is today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and it remains the most humane image of a saint whom the Baroque more often preferred to show swooning under an angel’s arrow.
