The founder of the Order of Preachers kneels in the black cappa and white habit of his friars, hands locked together, his whole body leaning into the cross as though it were the only fixed thing in the world. 📖 Inspiration & Story

El Greco painted Saint Dominic in Prayer in Toledo around 1605, at the height of his late style, when he had lived in Spain for nearly thirty years and had abandoned any remaining Venetian softness for the stretched forms and cold, electric light that no one else was painting. The subject came from the Dominicans themselves, a powerful presence in Toledo and a driving force of the Counter-Reformation, who wanted images that taught interior prayer rather than narrative miracles, and El Greco produced several versions of this composition for them. The theology is the plain Dominican programme, contemplata aliis tradere, to hand on to others what you have contemplated, so the saint is shown at the source of his preaching rather than in a pulpit. Long dismissed as eccentric and even attributed to defective eyesight, El Greco’s late manner was rediscovered around 1900 by Cezanne, Picasso and the German Expressionists, who recognised in exactly these stretched, burning figures the beginning of modern painting.
