📖 Inspiration & Story

Joan of Arc (Jeanne d’Arc, 1412-1431) was a peasant girl from Domrémy in Lorraine who, from the age of thirteen, heard the voices of Saint Michael the Archangel and the virgin martyrs Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint Margaret of Antioch. Convinced she was called by God to deliver France, she convinced the Dauphin Charles to give her an army, led the relief of Orléans in May 1429, and stood at his coronation in Reims cathedral only weeks later – a rise so improbable that her contemporaries could only read it as providence.

Captured at Compiègne, tried by an English-controlled ecclesiastical court and burned at the stake in Rouen at nineteen, she was rehabilitated by Pope Callixtus III in 1456 and finally canonised by Benedict XV in 1920 as one of the patron saints of France. This canvas continues the Pre-Raphaelite tradition of solemn, spiritual portraiture – the same devotional lineage as Millais and Rossetti – painted in-house for Jesus Christ Pictures by our resident artist Heathcliff de Clairvaux, so this centuries-old story of holy courage can still speak to households and prayer corners today.
