These are the words on every St Jude novena card in every wallet and every kitchen drawer: Most holy Apostle, Saint Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. The traditional prayer to St Jude has been said by more desperate people than almost any other, and here it is given the setting it has always deserved: a full medieval illumination, gold initial, painted border, the apostle himself in a roundel with his club and his flame. Hung above a desk or a doorway, it is the prayer of last resort, kept where you can reach it.

📖 Inspiration & Story

Saint Jude Thaddeus was one of the Twelve, a kinsman of Jesus and the author of the short, fierce New Testament letter that closes with the blessing to him “who is able to keep you from falling”; he preached in Mesopotamia and Persia with Simon the Zealot and was martyred there. For centuries he was the forgotten apostle, invoked by almost nobody, because his name sat too close to Judas Iscariot’s and the faithful feared praying to the wrong man. That neglect became his patronage: as the tradition has it, a saint nobody troubled would be all the more eager to help, so those in desperate straits began calling on him, and he answered.

The prayer reproduced here is the traditional one, the text that spread through the twentieth century on the novena cards of the shrines of Chicago and Buenos Aires, carried by immigrants, prisoners, the sick and the poor, and it is still prayed in the nine days before his feast on 28 October. It is the version that keeps “particularly in my present need”, leaving the petition unnamed so that the prayer belongs to whoever is standing in front of it.

The design draws its language from the medieval scriptorium, where monks worked gold leaf, vermilion and intertwining vines around sacred words. Carried into a modern home, the great prayer of impossible causes shines again as it once did on vellum.
