Saint Dymphna was a fifteen-year-old Irish princess of the seventh century whose father, a pagan chieftain, lost his mind with grief when her mother died and turned his obsession on his daughter; she fled across the sea to Geel in Flanders, and there he found her and beheaded her with his own sword. Because she died at the hands of a man who was out of his mind, the troubled and the sick began coming to her shrine, and the townspeople of Geel started taking the mentally ill into their own homes, a tradition of community care that has run for some seven hundred years and that psychiatrists still study today. She is the patroness of anxiety, depression and mental illness, and her feast falls on 15 May.
