Our Lady of Czestochowa Prayer Poster

Please note: this listing is for the unframed print only. The frames shown in the photographs are for display purposes and are not included.

This prayer says the thing the icon of the Black Madonna has always said without words: You bear your wounds and yet you shine; teach me to carry mine with the same quiet dignity, without bitterness and without despair. The Prayer to Our Lady of Czestochowa speaks to the scarred Virgin of Jasna Góra as what she has been for six centuries, a Mother who understands, and asks her to watch over a home the way she watched over Poland. Set as a medieval illumination with a gold initial and a painted border, it belongs wherever someone is carrying something heavy.

✨Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?

The heart of this poster is that it takes the scars seriously. Rather than praying past the wounds on the Virgin’s cheek, the text makes them the whole point: a Mother who understands because she is marked, who is asked for dignity in suffering rather than escape from it, and who is invoked for faithfulness when faith is costly and hope when hope is mocked. She sits in her roundel at the lower left, the Child in her arm and the two gashes plain on her face, framed by lapis and vermilion blossoms in the manner of the great illuminated books. Each stanza opens with a painted initial, and the parchment ground makes the words look as old as the devotion.

📖 Inspiration & Story

Our Lady of Czestochowa is the Black Madonna of Jasna Góra, a Byzantine-type icon that has hung in southern Poland since 1382 and whose dark face carries two long parallel scars. In 1430 Hussite raiders plundered the monastery and slashed the Virgin’s face; the legend says the cart carrying her away would not move, and that the raider who struck her twice more fell dead. Restorers repainted the gashes again and again and they kept reappearing through the overpaint, so in the end the painters cut them deliberately into the new surface, which is why she still bears them today.

Her fame was sealed in 1655 when a few hundred defenders held Jasna Góra against a vastly larger Swedish army, a deliverance credited to her, after which King John Casimir crowned her Queen and Protector of Poland. She has been the emblem of Polish identity through the partitions, the Nazi occupation and the Solidarity years, and pilgrims still walk for days from Warsaw to reach her, above all for her feast on 26 August.

The prayer printed here is a contemporary one built around that unerased face, and the setting is medieval by craft: the illuminated initial worked like beaten gold, the blackletter script, the flowering border and the roundel portrait, all drawn from the scriptorium tradition in which sacred words were given gold because beauty was thought a fitting servant of holiness.
