📖 Inspiration & Story

The original Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a Byzantine-style icon painted on walnut, probably on Crete in the fifteenth century, of the type the Greeks call the Theotokos of the Passion; the story goes that a merchant stole it from a Cretan church, survived a storm at sea because of it, and died in Rome, where the Virgin’s own instruction that she be placed “between the basilicas of Saint Mary Major and Saint John Lateran” saw her installed in the church of San Matteo in 1499. She hung there for three centuries, was lost when Napoleon’s troops destroyed the church in 1798, and resurfaced only in 1863 in an oratory in Posterula, when a Redemptorist historian recognised her from a sermon he had heard as a boy.

In 1866 Pius IX gave the icon to the Redemptorists with a charge that has shaped Catholic devotion ever since, “Make her known throughout the world”, and they did: she now hangs in Sant’Alfonso on the Esquiline, on the exact spot the Virgin had named, and her image travelled with Redemptorist missionaries to every continent. The perpetual novena that grew around her, above all the Wednesday devotion at Baclaran in the Philippines, still draws crowds of tens of thousands in a single day, one of the largest weekly gatherings of prayer anywhere on earth.

The Greek letters in the gold ground name the figures, MP ΘΥ for the Mother of God, IC XC for Jesus Christ, OAM for the archangel Michael and OAГ for Gabriel; the star on her veil is the ancient mark of her virginity; and her feast falls on 27 June. This rendering follows the icon detail for detail, painted rather than photographed, in the same Byzantine grammar of gold ground, elongated hands and inward calm.
