Why she is dark has been argued for generations, and there are three honest answers rather than one: many of these panels were simply darkened by nine hundred years of candle smoke and by varnish and lead pigments oxidising in the dark; some were painted dark from the start, following the line from the Song of Songs that the Church had long read as Mary’s own, nigra sum sed formosa, “I am black but beautiful”; and some sit on far older holy ground, where local devotion to a dark mother-figure was there before the shrine was.

This canvas is an original work in that tradition, not a reproduction of any of those historic icons.
