The giant is halfway across, knee-deep in a river painted as a field of silver spirals, leaning on a staff that has put out green leaves at the top. On his shoulder sits the Child, one hand raised in blessing, the other holding the globe of the world, and Christopher turns his head up to look at him with an expression somewhere between effort and astonishment. A walled town stands on one bank, a small church on the other, and behind them the sky is beaten gold. He is the saint people keep in the car, and this is why.

The picture is built on one great diagonal, the red cloak sweeping from the water to the Child’s feet, and everything else steadies it: the vertical of the staff, the horizontal bands of the river, the two haloes worked into the gold. The water is the passage people stop at, since it is not described but patterned, curl after curl of silver, in the way a late Gothic panel painter would have solved it. The gold ground keeps the whole scene out of ordinary time, which is right for a legend. Framed by a door or above a hall table, it makes a departure look like a blessing.

📖 Inspiration & Story

The legend, as Jacobus de Voragine set it down in the Golden Legend around 1260, is the story of a giant called Reprobus who decided to serve the greatest king in the world, left one master after another as he found each one afraid of something, and was finally told by a hermit that he could serve Christ by carrying travellers across a dangerous river, since he had the strength for it and no gift for fasting or prayer. One night a child asked to be carried, and grew so heavy in midstream that the giant thought he would drown; on the far bank the child told him he had carried the weight of the world and its maker, and to prove it, told him to plant his staff, which flowered by morning. From that he took his name, Christophoros, the Christ-bearer. The medieval Church made him one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and painted him enormous on the north walls and porches of churches all over Europe, because of a widespread belief that whoever looked on his image would not die suddenly that day, so the image had to be visible from the road. The 1969 revision of the Roman calendar removed his feast from the universal calendar for want of reliable historical evidence, which the newspapers reported as a demotion; he was never de-canonised, his feast is still kept locally on 25 July, and the medal on the dashboard never went anywhere. He remains the patron of travellers, drivers, sailors, pilots and porters, which makes this print a natural gift for a new licence, a first car or a long journey.
