Description

Risen Christ Canvas – Jesus with the Resurrection Banner

✨ The Risen Christ with the Resurrection Banner

The Risen Christ looks straight at you, one hand raised in blessing, the other holding the tall staff of the Resurrection banner, white with a red cross, lifting in a wind you cannot feel. He is wrapped in a white mantle edged with gold, and the marks of the nails are still in his hands, the wound still in his side. Behind him the halo is gold and red, and the sky is full of stars. It is Easter morning painted as a greeting: Peace be with you.

✨ Why Choose This Sacred Artwork?

Most pictures of the Resurrection show the moment itself, the tomb breaking open and the soldiers thrown back. This one shows what comes after: the risen Jesus standing calmly in front of his disciples, and in front of us. The composition is frontal and simple, the blessing hand and the banner framing the face, and the whites of the mantle and the flag are the brightest things in the picture against the deep lapis ground. The expression is the heart of it, gentle and direct, very slightly smiling. Painted in the academic manner, it is an Easter picture that does not need to come down after Easter.

📖 Inspiration & Story

The Gospels do not describe the Resurrection itself. They describe an empty tomb, and then a man who appears among his frightened friends behind locked doors and says Peace be with you, and then shows them his hands and his side (John 20:19-20). That is the moment this painting keeps. The wounds matter: the Risen Christ is not a ghost and not a different man, he is the one who was crucified, and the marks have become signs of victory rather than defeat. The banner says the same thing in the language of the Middle Ages. A white standard with a red cross, carried on a staff topped by a cross, it is the flag of a king returning from a battle he has won, the battle against death; it appears in Piero della Francesca’s Resurrection at Sansepolcro, painted around 1460, and in countless altarpieces after it, and it is still carried in Easter processions and planted beside the paschal candle. Saint Paul gave the theology in one line: Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 15:20). The raised hand, with two fingers extended, is the ancient gesture of blessing, the same one the priest makes at the end of Mass. This original painting was made for jesuschrist.pictures to show the risen Jesus as the disciples first saw him, wounded, victorious, and at peace.
